If that's not an option for you, then you might want to look into a cheap ONVIF compatible wifi camera and viewing software (Tin圜am Pro for Android is the best, period, and there's not even a comparable app on the iPad, but IP Cam Viewer does the job, but it's nowhere near as fully featured as Tin圜am Pro on Android). The app just needs to be in the foreground for this to work, so the screen would need to be on and the app open. It should open the video full-screen with no user interaction needed whenever there is an alert (motion or ring), allowing you to see the video without having to touch anything.
